Plant Information

Mandevilla has been a popular plant for many years. The most well known variety is ‘Alice DuPont' a large vigorous vine with pink flowers, often referred to as "that mailbox plant." ‘Alice DuPont has taught us a few things that are common to all Mandevilla.

All Mandevilla are Tropical plants. They all require temperatures of 75 degrees or warmer to grow well. Some are more cold hardy than others but the differences are relatively minor. Do not expect mandevilla to do well in a cold greenhouse. In addition to warm temperatures, all Mandevilla like very high light levels. Full sun is best for virtually all varieties.

No Mandevilla will tolerate "wet feet." Soil mixes should be well drained. Container size should be well matched to to plant size. Do not expect a small plant to handle all the water available in a large container.

Fury Mandevilla are far more resistant to many of the problems experienced with ‘Alice DuPont.' They have less problems with insect pests like whiteflies, spider mites, and thrips but all these pests must be monitored and controlled. Fury Mandevilla are also more resistant to fungal problems like Circospera Black Spot and Fusarium Root Disease.
